Motto: Siyo Nqoba
Animal: Baboon
The African Adventourists chose the motto ‘Syio Nqoba’ due to its African roots and the relevance to the theme of the Ravenclaw Summer Camp. ‘Siyo Nqoba’ is derived from the Zulu language. The phrase is used as lyrics in the well-known song ‘The Circle Of Life’ which is present at the beginning and end of the 1994 film ‘The Lion King’. The phrase actually translates to ‘We are going to conquer’ or ‘We will conquer’. Therefore we found relevance between the lyrics, the film and the theme of the camp.
The choosing of a baboon was in a way, completely random but still relevant. It is a prominent mammal in Africa and of all the animals in East Africa, it is the animal that most frequently interacts with people. They are very adaptable to different habitats and are generally characterised as extremely intelligent and crafty. We also chose the baboon because ‘Rafiki’ was the wise baboon in ‘The Lion King’ so it tied both the motto and the animal together.
